B.o.B comes through with a brand new mixtape for the holiday season that is an excellent representation of himself as an artist: No Genre. I was prepared for the unexpected and was still surprised to see the unique sounds and the bountiful, meaningful concepts and depth in the lyrics. One major theme of No Genre can be encapsulated by the video for "The Watchers" below, which is a striking, thought-provoking song that challenges some of the notions of the general public toward all of the Free Masonry/Illuminati talk as well as some general fishiness behind the scenes. Watch how the imagery matches up with the words in the video that drives home the message even more. "The Watchers" isn't the only song that explores some of the above themes; "Dr. Aden" is probably even more resonating as B.o.B mixes in some matter-of-fact raps with startling news clips that will really ignite some second-guessing about society. At the very least, skepticism. I love this direction that B.o.B is moving in at times like these throughout the mixtape; at other times, he just straight raps... and kills it.
He keeps it real and honest throughout the entire project and continues to allow the listeners in to his quirky persona. The mixtape is bolstered by appropriately placed singing, superb efforts from collaborators like T.I., Bun B, and Cyhi Da Prynce ("Higher" is ridiculous), and some previously released, yet quality bonus tracks and features. No Genre will definitely appeal to fans of all genres, but it is also great to see how serious B.o.B went on this one from a rap standpoint, to prove to new fans that he's got skills on the mic beyond what are illustrated on his hits. It is simply a must-download and a truly impressive mixtape from beginning to end, and also my favorite of B.o.B's to date. Enjoy!
